Letter from the Principal

Happy New Year and welcome 2017!   Hard to believe that four months of school is complete.  Students are at the midpoint of the second marking period and working hard. I would like to provide a little “look back” at the past four months of school.

This past fall has been busy with lots of school and sporting events.  The middle school musical was a huge success thanks to the efforts of our talented students and staff.  The media center was transformed into a scary house for the book fair that raised money for the school.  The fall sports saw the inclusion for the first time of 5th graders from Atlantic Highlands and Highlands Elementary Schools thanks to the efforts of a hard-working Athletic Task Force comprised of parents, coaches, administrators and Board of Education members.  It is through their efforts last spring that this endeavor came to fruition.  It was a great experience for all those who played soccer, field hockey and ran cross country.  It is always the goal at HHRS to include as many students as possible with our extra-curricular activities and sports teams.  This has expanded our program and opened up the door to many possibilities in the future.  Students have been to several performances thanks in part to the “No Seats Empty” Grant that HHRS won which enables the students to attend performances at Two River Theater for free.  This experience has been invaluable and the administration and staff are truly grateful to TRT for their continued generosity to the students of HHRS.  The students have also received free tickets from the Count Basie Theater for several performances there as well.  We are grateful to the Count Basie for their generosity.  The Varsity Field Hockey team had a fantastic season making it to the semi-finals of the Shore Conference and the MS Girls Soccer team went to the finals in their inaugural season.  Varsity Cross Country and MS Cross Country also had great seasons with several students placing in the first, second and third place positions.  The Winter Concert was a night of beautiful music performed by the jazz band, Accappella Choir, MS and HS concert bands.  The students were dazzling in their tuxedos and black gowns preparing for their competition in April in Disney World!  The HHRS marching band will be marching down Main Street in Magic Kingdom on April 27, 2017.  If you are in the Orlando area, stop in to see this group of talented students.  You can also support the band by clicking on the front page to make a pledge.

In the college front, seniors continue to obtain acceptances from prestigious colleges and universities while also getting merit scholarships to their respective schools.  Decisions will continue to come in through April and then seniors will make their final decision by May 1. If you have any questions about college and/or careers, please call the guidance office and make an appointment with our two new counselors: Rachel DeWyngaert and Kate Caldwell.  They are always eager to assist parents and students regarding academic, social and emotional concerns.

There are no midterm exams as we have replaced them with the NWEA, which will be administered at the end of January-check calendar for dates.  Also the AP Literature Class under the leadership of Mrs. Merrigan will be running the “Poetry Out Loud” competition at HHRS on Tuesday, January 10 beginning at 12:55 pm.  All parents are invited to attend.  Invitations have been sent to the parents/guardians of all the competitors.  Thank you to all the judges from school and community who will be here to assist with selecting the winner to represent HHRS at Two River Theater Regional Competition.  The middle school will be competing at the annual Geography Bee on Thursday, January 12, 2017 beginning at 1 pm.  Ten finalists will be competing from the 7th and 8th grade students, and the winner will represent HHRS by taking a written exam.  All are welcome to attend!

There will be an OPEN HOUSE on January 19, 2017 beginning at 6:30 pm. for all in-coming 6th graders to HHRS.  All are welcome to attend this event even if your son/daughter is not in the 6th grade. Come and find out about the great offerings at our school.  Realtors are also invited to visit the school and speak to teachers and administrators.  On Monday, January 23, 2017 all 8th-11th grade parents/students are invited to HS Planning and Post-Secondary Planning Night beginning at 6:30 pm for grades 8-10 and at 7:30 pm for 11th grade parents/students.  Don’t miss this important event.

There are a lot of events that happen at HHRS—don’t miss them!  Check on the calendar as well as read your weekly updates sent by me to all parents and staff.  When we all work together, students are successful!
